Just a quick note about the Red Top Mountain Meeting.

Bring your hammer and tongs.

Those that want to forge will get a piece of stock and 15 minutes (timed) in the fire.
The item we want forged is an S hook from 3/8 stock about a foot long.
The stock will be provided.

That way everyone gets time in the fire, and everyone gets to see the different ways a hook can be forged.

At the end of it, if you want to let your hook be judged, we will set them on a table with a cup.
I will bring marbles, and everyone can pick 1 marble and drop in the cup at the hook they like.

If you want to you can put your hook in “iron in the hat”.

Additional directions to the site.

From Atlanta 75 to exit 285 turn Right.
Past the Big Green Bridge go to the Second Road with a Road Sign – Park Marina RD.
Turn Left and then Right at the 1st Road with the Boulders, just past the group Shelter.

For those who could not attend, we had a fantastic day.
For those who did attend we had three winners.

We started with 20 pieces of 3/8 square stock and ended with only 2 pieces left.
The first pair of participants, quickly pointed out we did not have a vice.
Some one had brought a bench vise for iron in the hat the rest of the participants were able to use it.
John Z. did not have access to the vice, so he hooked the horn of the anvil and then twisted the hook with his twisting fork.

I was hopeful we would see variety of styles of hooks and ways to forge them.
Boy did we, fishtail scrolls, and most were twisted.

I don't think I have ever seen so many people get into the fire at a meeting.
It was a side effect of the short time limit for the competition.

We had 5 or 6 kids with instructors in the fire.
Visitors and folks that just came to enjoy the park.

At the end of the day, the vote were tallied and we did have winners.

Barry B. 1st place.
Prize: ABBA T-shirt and ABBA Hat

John Z. 2nd place.
Prize: ABBA Hat

One of the Kids that came to enjoy the park, I did not get his name.
Prize: ABBA Bumper Sticker.
