Where do you get your steel? I'm not talking about scrounging dumpsters and walking the railroad tracks.
Where do you BUY new steel in metro Atlanta? |

I have two regular sources. For full pieces of steel - Bar stock/sheet/tubing and misc railing parts I use Industrial Metals and Surplus/Georgia Steel:
http://www.steelcheap.com/ Located near midtown off of the Howell Mill Rd exit on I-75 on the other side of the railroad yard. Bring a hard hat if you have one - otherwise you have to wait inside you truck the whole time while you are waiting to load. For drops and small pieces I use Metal Supermarkets: http://www.metalsupermarkets.com/ The one I use is located near I-85N and I-285 off of Pleasantdale Road. (678) 421-0054 4301 Pleasantdale Road Atlanta, Georgia 30340 These guys have a great drop room of all sorts of bits and pieces for sale by the pound. There is also a Marietta location - but I have not been to that one. Both of these are business hours locations so you have to go by them M-F (not open on weekends) |

I use IMS as well. I make an annual run (and it's about that time again!). What I've done is to compare my leftover stock with what I'd purchased the previous year and adjust my order accordingly.
I have not been to Metal Supermarkets, but would like to give them a try! |

Kevin,
I have also, used Metal Supermarkets for some stuff, especially the drops section. They have some unusual sizes at times, but for small quantities they are great. I picked up some 1 1/4 X 1 1/4 X 14" for some hardie posts last year. The site I use the most is Atlanta Steel Mart - 770-416-6999, Atlanta Steel Mart They will cut small quantities, since my truck has a short bed. They also carry some ornamental pieces ready to weld in, Post tops, balusters and the like. They are off Buford Highway at 2805 Amwiler Road, across from Newell recycling. |

Here north of Atlanta, I have used Steel Materials, Inc. in Cartersville. 168 Cassville Road, Cartersville, 30120 770-382-0264. For tool steel, I have used Southern Tool Steel in Chattanooga. 2726 Kansita Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37343. 423-870-7888. The owner is into blacksmithing and if you tell him you are a guild member, he may give you a deal on drops.

I made it to the Marietta Metal Supermarket yesterday. They are only 15 min. from work which is a bad thing! I was pleased with their prices and variety. I didn't spend time looking at drops, but was focusing on 4 or 5 things for specific projects.
I would not have known about them if it were not for this forum! Thanks all! |

Let me echo Torch Mullins. Steel Mart and Metals Supermarket are both near each other just north of I285 in the vicinity of the Buford highway. I can get to both of them in the same trip.
Both will cut what you want or need to be able to haul in a pickup bed. I just found out that Steel Mart has sheet metal drops, but it is what they have at the time you visit. When I went there hoping for 18 Ga. they did not have it, but there was plenty of other stuff thicker on the floor. I think that when I am in the vicinity it might behove me to drive in and look. Metals Supermarket has a wide variety of shapes and sizes and will cut to order. They have a "Drops" room and it has alloy and tool steel in a huge number of sizes and alloys. If I were into making hammers it would be a gold mine of inexpensive materials. NOT ONLY ALLOY STEELS BUT MILD STEEL AS WELL AND YOU MIGHT FIND A SCOURCE OF A SMALL AMOUNT OF A SIZE YOU NEED AN NOT HAVE TO BUY 20 FEET. When I did not find the 18 Ga drops at Steel Mart I drove to Metals Supermarket and they cut what I needed. NOW DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A SCRAP METAL YARD ON THE NORTH SIDE OF ATLANTA WHERE THEY WILL ALLOW YOU TO ROOT AND AND BUY STUFF BY THE POUND ? |

That is fast becoming a thing of the past. Liability! Around here, the yards are just now building back "scrap" inventory after the big China push. For a while they were shipping out 6 tractor truck loads a day vs. 1 a week before. Now the price they are paying is back down, but what they charge is still up. Lose-lose.

My two-cents worth echoes Linda's post. I called around when I was looking for ¼" and ⅜" plates for my table, and the best price was from the Steel Materials in Cartersville. It was a little haul from my home in Smyrna, but they were significantly cheaper compared to Metal Supermarket, so it was worth the drive.
